Gardiner, Montana

The town of Gardiner, Montana. Photographer: Rick Landry.

Bordering the North entrance of Yellowstone is the small town of Gardiner. The town boasts just under 900 residents which host guests to Yellowstone numbering in the hundreds of thousands flocking to the park each Summer. It is quaint but has many of the essentials including lodging at Yellowstone Village Inn and Suites and a small general store, Gardiner Market, which stocks necessities like bug repellant, bear spray, and sunscreen, often forgotten by tourists, as well as groceries that meet gluten-free and organic dietary needs. The Yellowstone River runs through the town and opportunistic locals have made their small town the rafting capital of the park. If you’re looking for a rafting tour Yellowstone Raft Company and Montana Whitewater Rafting and Zipline Tours are great options. The Roosevelt Arch on the southern edge of town marks the border between the city and the park. Yellowstone gets crowded during the summer, so the best time to visit is during spring.
